Term 2

Welcome back to year 2 – we hope you had a lovely break. We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning, discovery and growth. Our aim is to help every child develop both academically and personally, building the confidence and skills they need to become independent learners.

Through our school values of Curiosity, compassion, Challenge and Courage, we encourage children to embrace new experiences, persevere with difficulties and support one another in their learning. By being ready, being respectful and being safe, children are able to thrive, take pride in their achievements and become positive members of our school community.

This term, our learning will be enriched through a focus on The Arts, providing children with opportunities to explore their creativity, imagination and self-expression. Through activities in art, music, dance, drama and design, children will be encouraged to show our values of Curiosity, Compassion, Challenge and Courage as they experiment with new ideas, share their work with others and develop their talents. We will celebrate individual creativity while fostering collaboration, helping children to build confidence and resilience. Pupils will work together to create, perform and appreciate a wide range of artistic experiences, developing skills that support both their personal growth and academic learning.

As part of our balanced curriculum, we are also placing a strong emphasis on phonics, spelling and Mastering Number. Regular phonics sessions will help children develop their reading and writing skills, while our Mastering Number programme will build fluency, confidence and a deeper understanding of number. These key skills provide the foundations for success across all areas of learning.

We look forward to working together to ensure your child has a happy, successful and rewarding year in Year 2. Thank you for your continued support.

Home Learning

Reading at Home

Reading with your child every day is one of the best ways to support their learning and development. Regular reading helps children to build their vocabulary, develop their language skills, improve their understanding of texts and grow their imagination. Most importantly, it helps to foster a lifelong enjoyment of reading.

Even spending a few minutes reading together each evening can have a big impact. Encourage your child to talk about the pictures, discuss unfamiliar words, make predictions and share their ideas about what might happen next. Above all, we want reading to be a positive and enjoyable experience that becomes a valued part of your daily routine.

Our book change day is Friday. Please ensure your child brings their book bag to school so that their books can be exchanged. Children will bring home both a phonics book, which supports the sounds and words they are learning in school, and a reading-for-pleasure book to share and enjoy at home.

Children have also been given a set of orange and red tricky words to practise at home. These are words that cannot always be sounded out using phonics rules, so regular, short bursts of practice will help children to recognise them quickly and confidently, supporting their progress as readers.

Maths

Regular practise on Numberbots will help the children develop their mathematical skills. Logins can be found in the front of their reading records.
